Plot summary
Karchy Jonas is seventeen, a high school student who came from Hungary with his father, Dr. Istvan Jonas. The family's American citizenship is still pending, and Karchy is trying to find his way in a new country. He holds a job at a local grocery store, where he pursues a co-worker. His hero is Billy Magic, the disc jockey whose radio show he follows, and Karchy enters a contest on that show, winning it by cheating. When Billy learns how the win was managed, he offers the boy a part-time job as his assistant and takes him under his wing.
