Plot summary
Anna Stubblefield, a Rutgers University philosophy professor, meets Derrick Johnson, a nonverbal Black man with cerebral palsy, in 2009. His mother and brother believe he wants to express himself, so Stubblefield offers facilitated communication, assisting him to type on a keyboard. Scientists warn that the typed words may come from the facilitator rather than Johnson. Stubblefield claims they fall in love, but his mother alleges he cannot consent. The accusation leads to a criminal trial over disability, race, and power.
