Plot summary
Mr. Badii, a middle-aged Tehran man, drives through the city and its outskirts in his truck, approaching strangers with an offer of a large sum of money. The job he describes is to come the next morning to a spot in the hills where he has already dug a grave, and either help him up if he is still alive or cover him with earth if he is not, because he intends to kill himself. He does not say why. A young Kurdish soldier refuses and leaves the car. An Afghan seminarian also declines, on religious grounds. Badii keeps driving, looking for someone willing to take the work.

- Critics at the film's 1997 Cannes Film Festival premiere demanded that Abbas Kiarostami cut Taste of Cherry's ending, and he did so for its theatrical release in Italy.
- Because director Abbas Kiarostami sat in the car's passenger seat while filming, Mr. Badii is rarely shown in the same shot as the person he is talking to.
- Taste of Cherry has no background score except over its ending titles, which use Louis Armstrong's 1929 adaptation of "St. James Infirmary Blues".
