Plot summary

In Tehran, Mohammad Ramezani attends a school for blind children. When the summer break begins, his widowed father, Hashem, arrives late to fetch him and asks the headmaster to keep the boy at the school instead. The headmaster refuses, so Hashem brings Mohammad back to the village, where his sisters Bahareh and Hanieh and his grandmother greet him. Mohammad roams the hills, feeling his way through the plants and soil, and reads his Braille lessons aloud at the local school, amazing the other pupils. Hashem is preparing to marry a local woman and has told her family nothing about his blind son, afraid they will take it as a bad omen. He begins to seek a way to hand the boy to someone else's care.
