Plot summary
Effie Williams works as a maid in Harlem and raises three daughters who sing in the church choir: Sparkle, the youngest; Sister, the lead singer of their group, Sister and the Sisters; and Delores, the middle sister. Effie encourages Sparkle to chase a career in music. Stix Warren becomes the group's manager and Sparkle's love interest, and the sisters sing at amateur nights. Levi Brown, Stix's cousin, performs with them and carries a crush on Sister, while their cousin Tune Ann sings in the choir. Sister takes up with Satin Struthers, a gangster. Effie's employer has ties to the Mafia and wants a share of the fame that Sparkle is headed for.

- More than 2,000 women auditioned for the role of Sparkle Williams before 17-year-old Irene Cara was cast, and she became the film's breakout star.
- Sparkle was the directorial debut of Sam O'Steen, the editor of Carnal Knowledge, Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, whom Warner Bros. head John Calley insisted had to direct the film.
- Michael Peters, the assistant to Sparkle's choreographer Lester Wilson, went on to choreograph "Beat It" and "Thriller" for Michael Jackson.
