Plot summary
Nineteenth-century China: Snow Flower and Lily are girls paired by a matchmaker as laotong, sworn sisters whose bond is meant to last a lifetime. The same matchmaker arranges their marriages, and their families keep them apart. The two exchange letters in nu shu, a secret script used by women, written on a white silk fan that Snow Flower owns. In present-day Shanghai, their descendants Nina Wei and Sophia Liao grew up close, and as teenagers they signed a laotong contract on the cover of a Faye Wong album, Fu Zao. Their favorite singer's music and their dancing to it drew the disapproval of Sophia's stepmother. Careers and love lives now pull the two women apart, and the story kept in the antique fan is what they must understand.
