Plot summary
Courtney Bates is a high school senior who has recurring dreams of the Driller Killer, the man who attacked her sister Valerie with an electric drill years earlier. Her mother offers to take her to a psychiatrist, but Courtney declines and tells her friends that Valerie is away at college rather than in a mental institution. She is drawn to a classmate, Matt, and asks him to come to her all-girl band's rehearsal. Her mother agrees to let her spend her seventeenth birthday weekend with her friends Amy, Sally and Sheila at a condominium in Desert Springs owned by Sheila's father. The complex is unfinished and almost empty. She has another nightmare before leaving, and at the condo her visions begin to intrude on what she sees while she is awake.
