Plot summary
Joan Huang has dreamed of being prom queen since childhood, but at her high school she feels shut out by her white classmates. When the most popular girl there, Olivia Hammond, says she will not run for the crown this year, Joan dyes her hair blonde and arranges a cut-price manicure for Olivia at a nail salon, hoping for an endorsement; neither attempt works. Then the creators of Ethnos, an online filter that changes ethnicity, contact her with a one-time offer. Joan learns Ethnos is a clinic where ethnic modification surgery can make clients look white; its founder, Dr. Willie Singer, has undergone the procedure himself. To obtain her mother Sofia's signature on the consent form, Joan claims the surgery is a school field trip.
