- On 18 June 2020 Wirecard announced that its auditors could not verify the existence of about €1.9 billion that was supposed to sit in trust accounts, and on 25 June 2020 the company filed for insolvency proceedings.
- Pav Gill, a lawyer who worked for Wirecard in Singapore, was one of the main sources in the investigation; in 2021 he publicly revealed his identity as the whistleblower who handed the Financial Times material that helped the reporting.
- Wirecard CEO Markus Braun resigned in June 2020 and was arrested shortly afterwards in the criminal investigation, while chief operating officer Jan Marsalek was fired and left shortly before the insolvency filing, becoming a central figure in the case.
