Plot summary
Lorna Whyte grows up in Hay as the youngest of eight children and trains as a nurse at Corowa Hospital before joining the army in 1941. She is selected for the Australian Army Nursing Service and posted with Lark Force, arriving in Rabaul on New Britain in April 1941. Sister Berenice Twohill is a Catholic nun from New South Wales who joined Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, a missionary order, in 1934, and she serves at Vunapope, the station where the Sacred Heart Mission has its headquarters. When Japanese forces invade Rabaul in January 1942, matron Kay Parker brings the military nurses to Vunapope, and Bishop Leo Scharmach leads the Catholic Mission there.

- Rod Miller, a general auctioneer, came across an old diary in 1991 while clearing possessions for an estate and nearly threw it out. The diary was written in cryptic prose and rhyme by Grace Kruger, one of four civilian nurses captured by the Japanese in Rabaul in 1942.
- Parker, the matron of the military nurses evacuated to the mission at Vunapope when the Japanese invaded Rabaul on 23 January 1942, repeatedly stood up to the Japanese to protect the women in her care.
