Plot summary
Christine Papin works as a maid for Madame Danzard, a widow, and her teenage daughter Isabelle. Christine recommends her younger sister Lea for a second position in the house. The two pairs of women barely speak to each other, divided by class and by the rooms they occupy, and the sisters come to rely on each other alone. Their closeness turns physical, adding to the distance between them and the Danzards. Christine urges Lea to stop handing their earnings to their mother, and the sisters cut ties with her. They keep more of the money, their work suffers, and they grow thin and tired, which the meticulous Madame Danzard notices.
