Plot summary
Derek Quinn finds a Christmas present on the porch on a December night. His father Tom opens the box and finds a music orb in the shape of Santa Claus; when he switches it on, retractable cords strangle him and he falls onto a fireplace poker. Two weeks later Derek, who has not spoken since, is taken by his mother Sarah to a toy store run by Joe Petto and his son Pino. Derek rejects every toy the two offer him. Noah Adams, who has followed the family, buys a toy Pino drops along with other pieces. Another gift turns up on the porch the next day, and a toy called Larry the Larvae kills Noah's landlord Harold on his drive home.
