Plot summary
A New Jersey mental institution releases some of its less disabled patients back into society under a release program. A computer error lets Howard Johns, a homicidal patient, out with them. Dr. Joan Gilmore, a psychiatrist at the institution, learns of the mistake and asks the administrator, Dr. Anderson, to call an emergency staff meeting. The staff tells her Johns died a week earlier. She does not believe it and takes the matter on herself. Her inquiries take her to the newspaper office, and there Mark McGowan offers his help.

- For the role of Mrs. Collins in Silent Madness, the filmmakers considered Anne Bancroft, Geraldine Fitzgerald, Dorothy Malone, Vera Miles, Yvonne De Carlo, Joan Fontaine and Maureen O'Sullivan. Shelley Winters briefly signed on but dropped out shortly before filming over a salary dispute, and Viveca Lindfors was cast instead.
- Lynn Redgrave was attached to Silent Madness to play Dr. Joan Gilmore but declined over a salary dispute, as the part was budgeted at only $35,000.
