Plot summary
Vasudev Ghanta, a Hyderabad filmmaker trying to get his first feature made, gives the psychology graduate Keerthi a role in his short film. His debut, Uniki, arrives in theaters a year after a night that leaves Keerthi hurt and ends their relationship. In Mumbai, discussing a Hindi remake, Vasu is arrested: the Kolkata publisher SR Publications says his film repeats a 1970s novel scene for scene. Freed on bail, he insists he wrote it himself, though the story already lives in him. That trail leads to West Bengal in 1969, where Shyam Singha Roy, a reformer from an orthodox family, is drawn to Maitreyi, a Devadasi who dances at a local temple.
