Plot summary
Daniel Daréus has spent his career on the podium, chasing music that opens people's hearts, while his own heart gives out. A heart attack ends his performing life, and he returns to Norrland, in Sweden's far north, moving into the disused elementary school of the village where he was bullied as a boy. Stig, the parish minister, and his singers invite Daniel to sit in one Thursday and offer a little advice. He agrees, unwillingly, and asks Stig for the post of cantor. Rehearsals restore his pleasure in music, and Lena, a young woman in the choir, catches his eye. The singers carry their own troubles: Gabriella is beaten by her husband, and Tore, a mentally handicapped man, is kept at a distance by the others.
