Plot summary
Sundaram is poor, and work as a waiter in a hotel is what he finds when he reaches Madras, where he had hoped to act in films. Serving a party on its way to Mahabalipuram, he meets Radha, whose father Chakravarthy owns the restaurant. He reads her warm manner as love and falls for her. At work he runs into Raghavan, a businessman of influence, and in their conversations he describes his acting ambition and a girl he loves, without giving her name. Raghavan, hearing only of his friend's hopes, believes the girl returns Sundaram's feelings and urges him to speak.

- Server Sundaram was the first Tamil film to show behind-the-scenes looks at filmmaking, including studio interiors, song recording, horse riding scenes and rain scenes.
- The film was publicised with a still of Nagesh holding many cups and saucers even though no such scene existed; producer A. V. Meiyappan had it added after watching the final cut.
- K. R. Vijaya, who played Sundaram's love interest Radha, was chosen only after many actresses refused to be paired with Nagesh.
- K. Balachander wrote the story of Server Sundaram for Nagesh after seeing his performance in Naanum Oru Penn (1963), and recalled in 2009 that writing it for Nagesh brought anxious moments, since promoting him was a risk.
- Goundamani, later a successful Tamil comedian, made his acting debut in Server Sundaram in an uncredited, non-speaking role.
- Balan, a member of the music troupe, claimed in 2015 that M. S. Viswanathan came up with the tune for "Avalukenna" in ten minutes, while Anand Venkateswaran of The Wire puts it at 15 minutes; T. M. Soundararajan spent the rest of the day recording it.
