Plot summary
Jonathan Trager and Sara Thomas meet at Bloomingdale's in New York while Christmas shopping, each reaching for the same pair of gloves. Neither is single, yet they spend the afternoon together and share dessert at Serendipity 3, where Sara says fate's small signals shape her decisions. The wind carries off her phone number, so she sets a test: Jonathan writes his on a five-dollar bill, and she writes hers inside a novel meant for a used bookstore. At the Waldorf Astoria they take separate elevators, agreeing that the same floor would mean they are meant for each other.
