Plot summary
Cotton Weary hosts a talk show. A caller demands Sidney Prescott's location; when Cotton refuses, the caller kills him and his girlfriend Christine. Detective Mark Kincaid tells Gale Weathers about the murder, and she goes to the set where Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro is filming, finding Dewey Riley working as an adviser and dating Jennifer Jolie, the actress playing Gale. The killer murders Stab 3 actress Sarah Darling, halting production. Sidney lives under an alias and works at a hotline for abused women. The killer reaches her and speaks in her late mother's voice, so she leaves her seclusion and goes to Hollywood, aware that she is no longer safe.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Scream 3 (2000)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- While making Scream 3, the studio went as far as demanding the film feature no blood or on-screen violence at all, a drastic departure for the series, but director Wes Craven directly intervened.
- Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher in the first Scream, was contracted to return in Scream 3 as the primary villain, orchestrating new Ghostface attacks from prison; after the Columbine High School massacre the script was scrapped and rewritten without him.
SPOILER
Scream 3's ending was refilmed in January 2000, three months after principal photography finished, because the original ending, with Sidney Prescott easily defeating Roman Bridger, was judged an inadequate conclusion.- Neve Campbell's other commitments meant she was available to film her role as Sidney Prescott for only 20 days, forcing the script to shrink the series' main character and focus on Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley.
- Marco Beltrami, returning to score the film, created a distorted, unnatural sound by recording instruments in abnormal circumstances, such as inserting objects into a piano and recording at various velocities, then modifying the results electronically.
- The script was in such flux that the epilogue was shot with three versions of Patrick Dempsey's character Mark Kincaid, one with him absent, one with his arm bandaged and one with him normal, because his fate was not yet decided.
- Scream 3 set a record for the widest opening ever in the United States and Canada, going out on 3,467 screens.
- The production filmed more than two hours of footage for a single three-minute scene featuring the character Randy Meeks in Scream 3.
