Plot summary
The Woman lives in an affluent suburb with her husband, a stockbroker, and their two young children. One winter morning she says goodbye to them, drives to the station and takes the train to London to go shopping. The Boy is on the same train. It is his birthday, and he means for the day to be unlike the others. On the train she badly wants a cigarette and picks at the No Smoking sign in her non-smoking compartment. He pulls the sign off and gives it to her, then tries to talk with her.

- Alvin Rakoff's film was originally to be called Whatever Happened to Happy Endings?, but Cinerama refused the title: Jean Simmons had just been Oscar-nominated for the similarly named The Happy Ending, and the studio feared other "Whatever Happened..." films would sue.
- The film's music was by Riz Ortolani, but he was not the director's choice: Alvin Rakoff cut the film to Joni Mitchell and Donovan's song "Colours" instead.
