Biography

Wing-Cho Yip, also known as Teddy Yip Wing-cho, was a Hong Kong actor and director who died in 2003. Born in 1945, he was the son of screenwriter Yeh Yi-Fang, also known as Yip Yat-Fong. He started as a contract director for Shaw Brothers in the late 1960s and trained under Ho Meng Hua and Lo Wei. Yip directed two of his father's scripts, The Girl of the Ghost Valley and Black Tavern, and critics took note of the revisionist hybrid style he brought to traditional material, giving his early work an offbeat quality. Later, when the Mandarin-era veterans were gone, he thrived amid the comeback of Cantonese-language film in Hong Kong. He spent much of his later career in front of the camera, appearing in police and gangster thrillers and in slapstick and romantic comedies. He was known for his mustached face and portly presence.
