Tyra Ferrell
Biography
Tyra Ferrell is an American actress who started out on the stage in New York, where she moved from her hometown of Houston after finishing high school, and she appeared in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin as well as Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music. Her first screen part came in the comedy So Fine (1981), followed by Lady Beware, School Daze and The Mighty Quinn. She is best known for a run of early 1990s films: Brenda Baker in Boyz n the Hood (1991), which brought her an NAACP Image Award nomination, Orin Goode in Jungle Fever (1991), Rhonda in White Men Can't Jump (1992) and the salon owner Jessie in Poetic Justice (1993). On television she had regular parts in The Bronx Zoo and City, recurring roles on Thirtysomething and the first season of ER, and later Empire, and she earned a second NAACP nomination for NTSB: The Crash of Flight 323.
