Truman Capote
Biography
Truman Capote was an American novelist, screenwriter, and playwright who helped found New Journalism. Born in New Orleans, he started writing short stories as a child and turned professional in the 1940s. The critical success of Miriam in 1945 led to a contract with Random House for his first novel, Other Voices, Other Rooms (1948). He won an O. Henry Award in 1948 for Shut a Final Door. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958), featuring Holly Golightly, marked what he called a second career. He also wrote plays, including The Grass Harp and House of Flowers, and screenplays such as Beat the Devil and The Innocents. His travel writing appeared in The Muses Are Heard. He died in 1984.

Capote was fired from his first New York job, as a copy boy at The New Yorker, after he angered the poet Robert Frost.
A first
In June 1945, "Miriam" came out in Mademoiselle, and in 1946 it took a prize for Best First-Published Story. That spring, Capote was accepted at Yaddo, the writers colony in Saratoga Springs, New York.
Behind the camera
Capote wrote the screenplay for The Innocents in eight weeks in 1960, setting aside his novel In Cold Blood to do it.
