Shania Twain
Biography
Shania Twain is a Canadian country singer and songwriter who grew up in Timmins, Ontario and began singing as a child, later signed with Mercury Nashville Records. Her first album, released in 1993, failed commercially, but The Woman in Me (1995) made her a star and earned her a Grammy. Come On Over (1997) produced twelve singles and won four Grammy Awards, and sold more than 40 million copies. Up! followed in 2002, and after a break she returned with Now (2017), which reached the top of the Billboard 200. Queen of Me arrived in 2023. She has won five Grammy Awards and been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. A Netflix documentary, Not Just a Girl (2022), covers her career.

Behind the award
In 1999, Twain received Entertainer of the Year honors from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. She became the first person who was not a US citizen to take the CMA award.
About the name
Twain took her stage name Shania around the time Mercury Nashville signed her, and it was rumored to be an Ojibwe word meaning "on my way."
Early training
Twain studied singing with Ian Garrett, a coach based in Toronto, and she often cleaned his house as a way to pay him for the lessons.
A role that slipped away
Twain was very close to becoming an American Idol judge after guest mentoring, but Jennifer Lopez got the job instead.
A first
Up! reached 5.5 million US sales by January 2008, and the RIAA certified it 11 times platinum, or Diamond. That made Twain the only female artist in history with three consecutive Diamond albums.
A first
Twain was the first woman to receive CMT's Artist of a Lifetime honor, given at the 2016 Artists of the Year ceremony.
