Roy Chiao

Biography

Roy Chiao was a Hong Kong-American actor whose athletic build and commanding screen presence earned him the nickname the Lion of Cinema. Born in Shanghai in 1927, he attended an American missionary school and became fluent in English, a skill that later helped him with Western productions. He began acting in 1956 after actress Bai Guang cast him in Xian mu dan, and he became a popular leading man in Hong Kong cinema. He appeared in King Hu's wuxia films A Touch of Zen (1971) as well as The Fate of Lee Khan (1973). His deep voice and language skills made him a favorite of Western filmmakers working in Hong Kong. He took supporting parts in Bloodsport (1988), Enter the Dragon (1973), and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). He won Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Summer Snow (1996). He died in 1999.

First role
Roy Chiao traveled to Japan in 1955. There he met the actress Bai Guang, and she gave him a part in the 1956 movie Xian mu dan.
A change of course
Chiao enlisted in the United States Army after going to Taiwan during the Korean War. A polyglot, he served as a battlefield interpreter, then joined the United States' negotiation delegation after the war, and was discharged in 1954 as a captain.
Languages
Chiao's fluency in several languages, English among them, made him a favorite of Western filmmakers shooting in Hong Kong, and he appeared in Ferry to Hong Kong, Enter the Dragon, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Protector and Bloodsport.
