Michael Hurst
Biography
Michael Hurst is a New Zealand actor, director, and writer who was born in Lancashire, England, and moved to Christchurch as a child. He is known as a Shakespearean stage performer and has appeared in solo shows, among them No Holds Bard, built around Shakespearean characters, and An Illiad. In 2023 he took The Golden Ass around New Zealand, and he directed and starred in King Lear for Auckland Theatre Company. On screen he took a lead in Death Warmed Up (1984), described as New Zealand's first splatter movie, and he played Iolaus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and in Xena: Warrior Princess. His directing credits include Ash vs Evil Dead and Spartacus: Blood and Sand for Starz, and the feature Jubilee. He plays a lead part in the 2025 film Birthright, and his honors include an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award and appointment as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
