Merna Kennedy
Biography
Merna Kennedy was an American actress whose short career bridged the late silent era and the early years of sound film. Born in Kankakee and raised in California, she performed as a child in a singing and dancing act with her brother on the Orpheum and Pantages vaudeville circuits. Her friend Lita Grey suggested silent films to her and later helped bring her to the attention of Charlie Chaplin. Kennedy became best known for her role in The Circus (1928), playing a circus bareback rider alongside Chaplin; her muscular legs, developed through dancing, helped her win the part. After The Circus, she continued acting in early sound films but left the screen in 1934.
