Lash La Rue

Biography

Lash LaRue was a Western film star whose black clothing and expert bullwhip work set him apart in the 1940s and 1950s. Born in Gretna, Louisiana, in 1917 and raised in several Louisiana towns, he moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. Warner Bros. screen-tested him but rejected him for resembling Humphrey Bogart, so Universal signed him in 1944 under the name Alfred LaRue and cast him in a pair of Deanna Durbin musicals and the serial The Master Key (1945). Producer Robert Emmett Tansey then placed him in a Cinecolor Western series with singing cowboy Eddie Dean, where he played the Cheyenne Kid and used a whip to disarm villains. By 1947 he had his own Cheyenne series for PRC, Eagle-Lion and producer Ron Ormond, developing his black-dressed hero image. He later worked on television programs such as The Gabby Hayes Show, 26 Men, Judge Roy Bean and The Life and Legend of Wyatt Earp. He died in 1996.
