Larry Holmes
Biography
Larry Holmes is an American former heavyweight boxer who held the world championship from 1978 to 1985 and competed professionally from 1973 to 2002. Born in Cuthbert and raised in Easton, Pennsylvania, he took up boxing at 18 and turned professional in 1973, building experience early on by sparring with Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Earnie Shavers. A 1978 victory over Ken Norton earned him the WBC title, and he went on to be recognized by The Ring and as lineal champion, later adding the new IBF belt. Holmes won his first 48 bouts, beating Ali, Shavers, Gerry Cooney and Tim Witherspoon, and a 1985 loss to Michael Spinks ended his unbeaten run. After retiring in 1986 he returned several times, falling short in title attempts, and his last fight came in 2002. He finished with 69 victories against 6 defeats, every one of them in world title bouts, and entered the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.

A change of course
Holmes began his professional career in 1973 and early on served as a sparring partner for Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Earnie Shavers and Jimmy Young, learning from the men he would later face.
A role that slipped away
Holmes agreed to fight Michael Spinks, the undisputed light heavyweight champion, on September 21, 1985, for his twentieth world title defense. A win would have matched Rocky Marciano's 49 straight wins without a loss.
A first
Holmes was knocked out only once in his career. In 1988, Mike Tyson dropped him in the fourth round, put him down two more times, and the fight was stopped.
