Judy Tenuta
Biography
Judy Tenuta was an American stand-up comic, actor and comedy musician whose signature creation was the bawdy, accordion-playing character she called The Love Goddess. Born in Oak Park, Illinois, she majored in theater at the University of Illinois at Chicago and tried an improv class with The Second City, then broke in on Chicago's club circuit during the 1970s. Her shows mixed insult comedy, observational riffs and music, and in 1988 the American Comedy Awards named her best female stand-up comic. She appeared in the 1987 HBO special Women of the Night with Ellen DeGeneres and Rita Rudner, lent her voice to animated series such as Duckman, and played the drill sergeant Samantha Rottweiler in Butch Camp (1996). Tenuta wrote two comedy books, released five comedy CDs, and earned two Grammy nominations for Best Comedy Album.
