Joseph Sweeney
Biography
Joseph Sweeney was an American actor of stage, television and film who often played grandfatherly parts. Born in Philadelphia, he began acting in 1910, moved to Broadway and toured the United States for years, having broken in with a stock company in Norwich, Connecticut and later appearing in productions such as The Clansmen and George Washington Slept Here. In the 1940s he turned to television, and in 1949 he took a regular part on the CBS series Wesley. His most important television work was Twelve Angry Men (1954), Reginald Rose's teleplay, in which he played Juror #9, a part he repeated in Sidney Lumet's film 12 Angry Men (1957) with Henry Fonda and Lee J. Cobb. He also took crafty or villainous parts in the films The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit (1956) and The Fastest Gun Alive (1956), and returned to the stage in 1953 as Giles Corey in Arthur Miller's The Crucible.
