John Barrie
Biography
John Barrie was an English actor who moved from the British stage to television and film. Born in New Brighton, Cheshire, he acted with repertory companies including the Birmingham Repertory Theatre and the Old Vic Theatre Company in the late 1940s and early 1950s, played Horatio in a 1949 Old Vic Hamlet and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1952 for The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. His screen debut came in the 1954 film Yankee Pasha, and his later films included Victim (1961), Sword of Lancelot (1963), The Oblong Box (1969) and Patton (1970). He was known for the title part in the police series Sergeant Cork from 1963 to 1968 and for Detective Inspector Hudson in Z-Cars. He also appeared in Coronation Street and The Doctors, and stepped away from acting during the 1970s.
