Joe Namath
Biography
Joe Namath is an American former quarterback who spent 13 seasons in the AFL and NFL, most of them with the New York Jets, after winning a national championship at Alabama in 1964. He was named the AFL's MVP twice, twice led the league in passing yards, and in 1969 guided the underdog Jets to a 16-7 win over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, earning Super Bowl MVP honors; he entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985. Building on a brief run as a television host, he moved into acting, starring in C.C. & Company (1970) and appearing on stage in Picnic and in a New York production of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial in 1983. He guest-starred on many series, often as himself, and later appeared in the films Underdogs and The Wedding Ringer.

A first
Namath became the first professional quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in a season, reaching 4,007 yards in 1967 during a 14-game season. Dan Fouts later broke the mark in a 16-game season in 1979.
A first
In 1967, Namath topped the AFL in yards per passing attempt with 8.2, then did the same in the NFL in 1972 with 8.7. No other player has ever led both leagues in that category in a season.
Beyond film
Namath legitimized his "Broadway Joe" nickname by joining a New York revival of The Caine Mutiny Court Martial in 1983 as a cast replacement.
A role that slipped away
In 1988, Namath was considered as host for the revived American game show Family Feud, but comedian Ray Combs was given the job instead.
