Joe Castro

Biography

Joe Castro is an American filmmaker and special effects artist. He began making latex masks and molds at twelve, influenced by Fangoria magazine and films like Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster and An American Werewolf in London, and he started filming on his family's land. At fifteen he won a national mask making contest held by Forrest J Ackerman, earning five days in Hollywood to study gore makeup with Joe Dante and John Carl Buechler. By seventeen, PM Magazine showed his werewolf transformation effect, and he provided effects for a March of Dimes charity haunted house. In 1988 he created an eleven room haunted motel for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. His directing credits include The Summer of Massacre (2011), Terror Toons (2002), Maniacal (2003), and The Jackhammer Massacre (2004); the first of these holds the Guinness World Record for the greatest number of deaths in a slasher film.
