Jim Nabors
Biography
Jim Nabors was an American actor, singer and comedian whose signature character was the dimwitted gas station attendant Gomer Pyle. Born in Sylacauga, Alabama, he began acting in skits at the University of Alabama, then moved to Los Angeles, where he performed at a Santa Monica nightclub. Andy Griffith spotted him there and put him on The Andy Griffith Show, and the part proved so popular that Nabors got his own spin-off, Gomer Pyle USMC. He also sang in a rich baritone, recorded romantic ballads, and hosted variety programs such as The Jim Nabors Hour. In the 1980s he appeared in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (1982), Stroker Ace (1983), which brought him a Golden Raspberry Award, and Return to Mayberry (1986), playing Gomer Pyle again. From 1972 to 2014 he sang Back Home Again in Indiana before the Indianapolis 500, and he died in 2017.

Nabors thought of himself as an entertainer rather than an actor. He left Gomer Pyle - USMC after five seasons, wanting to move on to something else and "reach for another rung on the ladder."
First role
Nabors first showed his singing voice on a 1964 episode of The Andy Griffith Show and on The Danny Kaye Show, then built a recording and concert career on it.

Nabors first took to the stage in 1982, playing Harold Hill in The Music Man opposite Florence Henderson. The production ran at the Burt Reynolds Dinner Theatre in Jupiter, Florida.
