James Nguyen

Biography

James Nguyen is a Vietnamese filmmaker who became known for the Birdemic series of horror films. He was born in Da Nang, South Vietnam, and his family left the country just before the Fall of Saigon. Without any formal film training, he grew up watching Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and The Birds, then sold software in Silicon Valley and first picked up a camera in 1999. He directed the low-budget romance Julie and Jack in 2003 and the science fiction thriller Replica, held back from release until 2017. Birdemic: Shock and Terror, a 2010 romantic horror film, brought him wider notice and is often described as one of the worst movies ever made; RiffTrax later mocked both it and Replica. Birdemic 2: The Resurrection arrived in 2013, and Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle (2022) premiered at Fantastic Fest.
