Jack Purvis
Biography
Born in London in 1937, the British actor Jack Purvis stood four feet tall and was often hired for parts that needed performers of short stature. For twenty years until 1991, he and Kenny Baker worked as a musical comedy double act called the Mini-Tones, with Purvis on trumpet and Baker on mouth organ and vibraphone. When the pair auditioned for Star Wars in 1976, Baker was immediately cast as R2-D2; Purvis joined the production after some negotiation, although they had reached the final of Opportunity Knocks and were reluctant to sideline their act. He went on to appear as a different alien being in every installment of the original Star Wars trilogy, including Star Wars (1977). Purvis also acted in three of Terry Gilliam's early fantasy films, taking notable parts in Time Bandits (1981) and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988). He died in 1997.
