Biography

Hope Lange was an American actress who worked across film, stage, and television. She was born in Redding, Connecticut, and grew up in a theatrical household. She began in television in the 1950s, appearing on Kraft Television Theatre, and was signed by 20th Century Fox. Her first film role came in Bus Stop (1956), and favorable reviews led to Peyton Place (1957), where she played Selena Cross and earned Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress. She became known for supporting ingénue roles, and her other films included The Best of Everything (1959), Wild in the Country (1961), and Pocketful of Miracles (1961). She returned to television as Carolyn Muir in The Ghost & Mrs. Muir from 1968 to 1970, winning two Primetime Emmy Awards. Her later credits included Crowhaven Farm (1970), Death Wish (1974), A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985), Blue Velvet (1986), and Clear and Present Danger (1994). She died in 2003.
