Hilo Hattie
Biography
Hilo Hattie was a Hawaiian performer who sang, danced hula, acted and did comedy. Born in Honolulu, she taught at Waipahu Elementary School in 1923, entertaining students with comedy hula routines, and by 1936 she had joined Louise Akeo's Royal Hawaiian Girls Glee Club to sing around Oahu. When Hilo Hattie Does the Hilo Hop became her signature song after she turned it into a comic number during a shipboard cruise to Portland, Oregon, in 1936. She adopted her stage name while performing The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai in Song of the Islands (1942). Harry Owens hired her for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel orchestra, and she joined the Hawaii Calls radio broadcasts, which brought her worldwide fame. On screen she appeared in Blue Hawaii (1961) and had a recurring role as Mrs. Pruitt on Hawaii Five-O. The Hawai'i Academy of Recording Arts gave her the 1978 Na Hoku Hanohano Sidney Grayson Award for lifetime achievement.

About the name
Hilo Hattie was the name Clara took legally after she sang The Cockeyed Mayor of Kaunakakai, her second signature song, in the movie Song of the Islands.
A change of course
Before her performing career took off, Hilo Hattie began teaching at Waipahu Elementary School in 1923, where she entertained her students with the comedy hula routines that later became her trademark.
Big break
Hilo Hattie performed on the Hawaii Calls broadcasts, which Webley Edwards hosted and which reached 600 radio stations worldwide. She became a global household name and toured, appearing in movies and on television.
Beyond film
In 1960, Hilo Hattie began performing at the Kaiser's Hawaiian Village, later renamed the Hilton Hawaiian Village Tapa Room, with two shows each night, six nights a week. That arrangement continued for more than a decade.
Beyond film
While performing at the Holland Supper Club in Eugene, Oregon, in 1945, Hilo Hattie earned the nickname "the Polynesian Sophie Tucker."
