Herbie Hancock
Biography
Herbie Hancock is an American jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer born in Chicago. He began as a child prodigy and got his start with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group before spending years in the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped reshape the jazz rhythm section and became a key architect of post-bop. In the 1970s he expanded into jazz fusion, funk, and electronic music built around synthesizers, and Head Hunters became one of his most important records. His best-known pieces include Cantaloupe Island, Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and Chameleon, all jazz standards, and in the 1980s the electronic instrumental Rockit gave him a hit single. He wrote music for films including Michelangelo Antonioni's Blowup and Round Midnight (1986), winning an Academy Award for the latter. He has won 14 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for River: The Joni Letters, and received the Polar Music Prize in 2025. He has taught at UCLA since 2012.
