Helen Broderick
Biography
Helen Broderick was an American actress known for comic parts, often as a wisecracking sidekick. Born in Philadelphia, she started on Broadway as a chorus girl in Florenz Ziegfeld's 1907 Follies and toured with his company from 1910 to 1915. She performed in vaudeville, then took a solo stage role in Nifties of 23. By the 1920s she was a Broadway comic in musical comedies and revues, and she reportedly drew notice in Jumping Jupiter (1911) after substituting for a lead actress. In the early 1930s she moved to Hollywood for the screen version of Cole Porter's Fifty Million Frenchmen, playing Violet Hildegarde. In film she became the quick-quipping friend in supporting roles, especially Astaire-Rogers musicals such as Top Hat (1935), as Madge Hardwick, and Swing Time (1936), as Mabel Anderson. Later films included The Rage of Paris (1938) and No, No, Nanette (1940), and she made her last screen appearance in Because of Him (1946).
