George Bartenieff

George Bartenieff was an American actor who worked extensively in the theater and also appeared in films and on television. Born in Berlin, he joined his parents in the United States after they left Europe. He first acted on Broadway at 14 in The Whole World Over in 1947, a production Harold Clurman directed. Training at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts followed, then work with the Theatre for the Living Arts, Andre Gregory's Philadelphia company, and with Joe Papp's New York Shakespeare Festival. In 1970 he helped found Theatre for the New City, where he spent 24 years acting, directing, and producing over 900 new American plays. He also helped start the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. His solo show I Will Bear Witness, adapted from Victor Klemperer's memoirs, won him a 2001 Obie Award, and he received a 2006 Drama Desk Award for Stuff Happens. He appeared in 18 films and 21 television episodes.
