Gavin MacLeod
Biography
Gavin MacLeod was an American actor whose career spanned six decades, beginning in films in 1957 and later including long-running television roles. Born in Mount Kisco, New York, and raised in Pleasantville, he studied acting at Ithaca College and served in the Air Force before moving to New York City. He first appeared on television in 1957 in The Walter Winchell File and soon had a credited film role in I Want to Live! (1958). Blake Edwards cast him in Operation Petticoat (1959), a breakout role, and in High Time (1960) and The Party (1968). He was a regular on McHale's Navy, then appeared in The Sand Pebbles (1966) and Kelly's Heroes (1970). His best-known roles were Murray Slaughter in the CBS sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show, which brought two Golden Globe nominations, and Captain Merrill Stubing on The Love Boat, which aired from 1977 to 1986 and earned him three more. He appeared in Time Changer (2002).
