Biography

Eminem is an American rapper and record executive who writes songs. Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, he moved to Detroit and began rapping at 14, gaining notice there. After his debut album Infinite (1996) and the Slim Shady EP (1997), he signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath Entertainment and broke through with The Slim Shady LP (1999). His next two albums, The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000 and The Eminem Show in 2002, each sold over a million copies in a week; the second became 2002's top-selling album worldwide and remains the top-selling hip-hop album. He starred in 8 Mile (2002), earning critical acclaim for a dramatized self-portrayal, and Lose Yourself from its soundtrack won an Academy Award in the best original song category, a first for a hip-hop act. He co-founded Shady Records, returned with Recovery (2010), the year's worldwide bestseller, and has won 15 Grammys and a Primetime Emmy while being a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.

Did you know?!

  1. Behind the award

Eminem recorded new songs for the soundtrack, among them "Lose Yourself," which took an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2003. He did not attend the ceremony, so co-composer Luis Resto accepted the award.

  2. About the name

Eminem's stage name began as "M&M", which he adopted at 14 while rapping with high-school friend Mike Ruby, who called himself "Manix". The initials eventually evolved into Eminem.

  3. A role that slipped away

Eminem was considered for the lead roles in Jumper, Elysium and Southpaw, and was signed to star in a film version of Have Gun - Will Travel that was never made.

  4. Behind the camera

After selling millions of records, Eminem was given his own label by Interscope, and he and Paul Rosenberg launched Shady Records in late 1999. He brought in his Detroit group D12 and rapper Obie Trice, then added 50 Cent in 2002 through a joint venture with Dr. Dre's Aftermath.

  5. First role

Eminem's first screen work came before 8 Mile: a small role in the 2001 film The Wash and an extra part in Korn's 1998 music video for "Got the Life", where he handed the band a demo tape.
