David Cryer
Biography
David Cryer is an American actor whose career has spanned stage, television, and film. Born in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Ohio, he graduated from DePauw University in 1958 and earned a directing MFA from Boston University in 1961. He helped found the American Conservatory Theater, which began in Pittsburgh and later moved to San Francisco, and helped establish the Mirror Repertory Theatre in New York. On stage he appeared in 13 Broadway shows, including 1776, The Desert Song, and Come Summer, and took leading off-Broadway roles in The Fantasticks and The Streets of New York. He is known for playing Firmin in The Phantom of the Opera for nearly 19 years and for his Juan Peron in Evita, a role he performed more often than any other actor. He also played The Celebrant in Bernstein's Mass at the Metropolitan Opera and the Kennedy Center.

In 1983 Cryer joined with others to create the Mirror Repertory Theatre in New York, and Geraldine Page starred there.
A first
Cryer has played The Celebrant in the Bernstein Mass more times than anyone, with performances at the Metropolitan Opera and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He has also appeared as Juan Peron in Evita more often than any other actor.
A change of course
Cryer was accepted to Harvard Law School for fall 1959 but chose theater after playing Curly in Oklahoma! that summer.
Behind the camera
Cryer and Albert Poland were producers of the National Tour of The Fantasticks. They also produced the New York production of Now Is the Time for All Good Men, a musical by Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford.
Beyond film
David Cryer has sung as a guest soloist with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and he has done this on two occasions.
