Betty Blythe

Biography

Betty Blythe was an American actress who began in the theater, appearing in stage pieces such as So Long Letty and The Peacock Princess, and also worked in vaudeville, where she was billed as the California Nightingale. Born in Los Angeles, she took an unbilled part in Bella Donna in 1915, and after a first role at Vitagraph Studios in 1917 she was handed the lead in the studio's A Game with Fate, released in 1918. She became a star in exotic silent films including The Queen of Sheba (1921), Chu-Chin-Chow (1923), and She (1925), and drew notice both for her dramatic roles and for her revealing costumes. She appeared in Nomads of the North (1920) with Lon Chaney and In Hollywood with Potash and Perlmutter (1924). She later worked as a character actress, with a small uncredited part in My Fair Lady (1964), and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
