Biography

Baz Luhrmann is an Australian filmmaker working across film, television, opera, theater and music. Born in Sydney, he moved from stage work to cinema after his short play Strictly Ballroom became his 1992 feature directing debut. Romeo + Juliet won BAFTAs for direction, music and screenplay, beating Titanic, and was recognized at the Berlin Film Festival. Moulin Rouge! won Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture, Best Actress and Best Original Score. His later features include Australia (2008), The Great Gatsby (2013), which won two Academy Awards for design, and Elvis (2022), which received eight Oscar nominations.
