Augustus Smith
Biography
J. Augustus Smith, also called Gus Smith, was an American actor, playwright and screenwriter. Born in Gainesville, Florida, in 1891, he began as a child in minstrel shows, formed his own minstrel company in 1911, and toured the United States. He later acted and wrote for theater and film. He wrote and appeared in Drums O' Voodoo (1934), based on his play Louisiana, which reached Broadway in 1933 with Smith starring and a cast from his New Negro Repertory Theater Group. For the Federal Theatre Project he helped write, direct and act in Turpentine, about Southern turpentine camps, and in 1936 he was one of three theater artists who took over the Negro Theatre Unit from John Houseman. His other stage work included Walk Together Chillun and the folk comedy Just Ten Days, and he directed The Case of Philip Lawrence (1937). He died in 1964.
