Angela Mao
Biography
She had a successful career as a Chinesa Opera actress, where her flexibility and martial arts first developed. Then, she trained in hapkido, and felt attracted to the new kung fu style, on demand by Hong Kong producers. Her career, if not long, was impressive, as she was one of the first women to make that sort of break-through in the film industry, until then reserving the fights and acrobatics to men. She retired from films in 1982 to devote herself to her family.

Getting ready for a role
While staying in Korea, Mao trained for four months in Hapkido with Sammo Hung and Carter Wong, preparing for the lead in a film of that name. She later earned a second-dan black belt in the art.
Big break
At 17, Mao's godfather took Golden Harvest director Huang Feng to see her perform, and Feng went on to cast her in several of the studio's movies.
Big break
After Hapkido became a hit, Bruce Lee approached Golden Harvest head Raymond Chow and suggested repeating the formula with taekwondo, leading to Mao teaming again with Sammo Hung and Carter Wong on When Taekwondo Strikes.
A first
Mao's Lady Whirlwind was retitled Deep Thrust for American release and billed her as Mistress of the Death Blow, and the campaign helped the film reach the top of Variety's box office chart.
Early training
Before enrolling at The Fu Shing Peking Opera in 1958, Mao took ballet classes as a child. Her training there lasted 10 years and focused on daomadan roles.
