Plot summary
In 1901, Preacher Julian Shay takes his new wife Raysha from Philadelphia to Driscoll, Montana, where he is to lead the church. He finds the town in the grip of Larn Claver and his sons, who control the water supply and do as they please. Sheriff Reese Scoby is honest but afraid of the family, and the townspeople have learned not to cross it. Julian persuades the sheriff to make a stand and talks the residents into re-excavating an old well, which they guard in shifts. Raysha hates living in Driscoll and contacts a man from her past, who comes to Montana for her.

- Universal Studios green-lit Red Headed Stranger with a $14 million budget and wanted Robert Redford for the title role that Willie Nelson had envisioned for himself; Redford took two years to turn the part down, and Nelson and writer-director William D. Wittliff gave back their advances to buy the script back.
- HBO budgeted $5 million and attached Sam Peckinpah to direct, but he left the project because he was unhappy with the low budget; the project died at HBO and Willie Nelson and William D. Wittliff raised the money themselves.
- The film's main set was a western town nicknamed "Willieville," built over the previous two years across the road from Willie Nelson's golf course, thirty miles west of Austin, Texas; most of the filming was done there, with nine other Central Texas locations also used.
