Plot summary
Dr. Carter Nix is a respected child psychologist who studies his daughter Amy as though she were a subject in a long experiment, tracking each stage of her development. His wife Jenny, an oncologist, is worried by his obsession with the girl. In the park where he takes Amy, Carter tries to persuade another mother to let her son travel abroad for an experiment, and the woman refuses. Jenny's former boyfriend Jack Dante comes back into her life, and she considers leaving Carter for him. Meanwhile, young mothers are losing their children, and Lieutenant Terri and Sergeant Cally lead the police investigation.

- The official director's cut began as a fan edit. Dutch director Peet Gelderblom, hearing that Brian De Palma regretted the theatrical cut, recut the film to match the original script and posted it on IndieWire in January 2012; De Palma was so impressed that he had Gelderblom supervise the HD version released on Blu-ray, saying it restored the true story of Raising Cain.
- De Palma shot the film in the towns around his own home on the San Francisco Peninsula for a simple reason: he was married to producer Gale Anne Hurd, they were living in Woodside, she was pregnant, and he wanted a film he could make simply and close to home.
- Part of the story came out of De Palma's own affair with a married woman: watching her sleep, he wondered what would happen if he failed to wake her in time to go home to her husband.
